Shooting JPEG instead of RAW for Street Photography

I’ve really been having fun with shooting JPEGs on my Fujifilm XH-1, I think I’m going to start sharing more of my images that are completely unedited and shot just using the settings that I set in my camera.

Bagel Espresso Donuts.

It’s really been quite liberating to be able to take a photo of a moment and not alter it at all in post production. To truly have that moment genuinely and know that when I shoot it then that’s it. No Lightroom presets, no photoshop actions just what the photo is once I click my shutter.

Sitting in the backseat of my friends car and shooting through the window.

Once upon a time there were moments when I was hangout out with my friends or at a family gathering when I would take photos and people would ask me for them and I couldn’t share the photos as quickly as I could because I felt the need to shoot the photos in RAW and get the ABSOLUTE BEST quality of image, I must shoot the image in a flat neutral colored RAW file and take it home and create the magic that people enjoy. Although it’s gratifying to receive the appreciation from people when they see my images the process of creating that image is not as fun as I would like it to be.

Juneteenth 2020.

In the spirit of old school polaroid film; I’m able to take a photo, transfer images from my computer to my phone and then like magic I am able to airdrop the images to my friends while we are still in the moment and it feels incredible.

Prospect Park.

This is truly an exciting venture for me as an artist. To lose the need to prove myself to others has begun to melt away from my creative process. I would have never imagined that I would be using a APS-C crop sensor camera, within $70 manual lenses and releasing these images to the public without any retouching. It feels like I’m taking my power back as an artist and I feel like I can finally curate a style that I could call my own for the first time. I’m excited for what’s to come.

One of my favorite restaurants.

All photos were taken with a Fujifilm XH-1 w/ 25mm f/1.8

All images are unedited with no post processing.

Dayana Jean-Marie x Chastity J. (for Ites International)

I had the privilege of working an amazing team on this day. We were able to secure a location (unofficially) in Park Slope, Brooklyn and the area fit the color scheme of the clothing and the models’ skin tones beautifully. I was so happy about how well everyone worked together and the I think the great energy of the day shines through in these images. We had a great time and hopefully we can do this again.

I always enjoy observing people in their natural state, while on a video shoot that I was capturing some behind the scenes footage for I noticed that a few of the models were taking some shots of themselves on their iPhones. I watched how well the models were photographing each others’ angles and giving each other encouraging positive reinforcement and it was inspiring because I know of a lot of photographers who don’t know how to create such a supportive, fun and dope atmosphere for their talent. I decided to take a backseat and watched these women in their element and (with their permission of course) just captured the moment with minimal input. It was so much fun.

5 minutes in front of mall display with a decent amount of negative space is all we really need. Christina did most of the work here. Effortless.

Sometimes there are photos that need a few years to start making sense to me.

This photo was taken 3 years ago (2017).

Moments like this is exactly why I don’t like to rush.
